Regional Volleyball Cup in Al Ain

The SOMENA Regional Volleyball Cup came to an end after an intense competition among the national teams of four countries of the region.

Spectacular Competitions

National teams of KSA, Syria, Lebanon and UAE partook in the event along with 100 volunteers from various UAE universities.

In a show of spectacularly, reflecting the genuine, traditional legacy of the UAE, the opening ceremonies were held stirring the admiration of the spectators.
Regional President, Ayman Abdel Wahab of SOMENA, attended the ceremonies along with Chairman Mohammad Fadel Al Hameli of SO UAE, H.H. Sheikha Rawda Bent Zayed Al Nahayan’s representative Fatima Al Shamsi and SO UAE Initiatives Manager Mariam Al Qubaisi.
On behalf of the UAE Federation for the Special Needs Sports, Chairman Al Hameli delivered a speech expressing his pleasure over hosting the first volleyball championship in the city of Al Ain.
“It is such an honor for the championship to be named after H.H. Sheikha Rawda Bent Zayed Al Nahayan. H.H. has never spared any efforts to strongly support special needs’ sports, and has always contributed generously to providing the necessary needs of athletes in a manner that has outstandingly helped in enhancing their performance and furnishing them with good opportunities to display their skills by competing with the world’s best champions,” Al Hameli said.

The competitions were packed with action

Regional President Ayman Abdel Wahab of SOMENA greeted the athletes partaking in the championship pointing out the success achieved by the UAE in organizing two regional championships in a row, in 2006 and 2008 respectively, as a first-time accomplishment of the like in the history of Special Olympics. Abdel Wahab further highlighted 2012 as the prime achievement for UAE to host the first SOMENA Unified Volleyball Cup.

Training, Too

The sweet taste of victory

On another note, the organizing committee held a training course aimed at enhancing the skills of coaches and officials in order to prepare them for participating in the upcoming competitions. The course was held under the supervision of SOMENA Games and Competitions Director, Sherif El Fouly who lectured the trainees on the most recent amendments of SO Unified Volleyball rules. 

In a statement he made in relation to the training course, El Fouly highlighted the terms of the cup as mandatory to all, explaining the championship regulations to be followed by all partaking teams. The fruitfulness of the course was clearly reflected in the active interaction by all trainees proving the significant importance of training as an effective means of fulfilling one of the Special Olympics’ objectives concerning the continuous enhancement of all participants.
