Special Olympics is a global organization that serves athletes with intellectual disabilities working with hundreds of thousands of volunteers and coaches each year. Since the establishment of Special Olympics in 1968, the number of people with and without intellectual disabilities who are involved with the organization has been growing, but the unmet need to reach more people with intellectual disabilities is staggering.
The Power of Sport. For every Special Olympics athlete, there are many more waiting for their chance.  Help us reach one more person who wants to participate.

More than 20,679 athletes participate in Special Olympics Michigan programs. Michigan has one of the largest programs in the U.S., but we're always looking for more athletes! Special Olympics Athletes are young and old. They have different backgrounds and hometowns. Some are gifted athletes; others must work very hard just to reach the finish line.

Athelete Development
Although sports is the "vehicle," the ultimate goal of Special Olympics is to help persons with intellectual disabilities participate and receive respect as members of their communities. Through Special Olympics, athletes gain self-confidence and prove their own capabilities. Special Olympics Michigan is not just training for sports--it's training for life!

Training and Competition
Special Olympics helps children and adults with intellectual disabilities improve their fitness, learn sports skills, and experience the joy of winning through regular training and competition. It's a year-round program and athletes can train for many different sports. It enables families to train together, to have common goals and to become part of the sports world of Special Olympics. Through Special Olympics, athletes gain self-esteem and discipline, which carry over into school, home and the workplace.

    The LETR Fire Truck Pull will take place on Saturday, May 14th at Green Oak Village Place. This event is open to the public. Teams of 10 people will show their strength as they pull a fire truck the farthest distance. Registration is $50 per person/$500 per team. Registration starts at 8:30 a.m. This inaugural event is hosted by Michigan State Police and Green Oak Charter Township Fire Department.

    The State Summer Games presented by SpartanNash take place June 2-4, 2016 on the campus of Central Michigan University in Mt. Pleasant. The State Summer Games is the largest Special Olympics Michigan event with 2,600 SOMI athletes along with an additional 3,400 coaches, volunteers, chaperones, family members and spectators attending each year. Ten types of competition are offered at the State Summer Games each year, including aquatics, athletics, bocce, bowling, gymnastics, horseshoes, power lifting, weightlifting, volleyball, developmental athletics and motor activities training program. Athletes compete in State Summer Games after qualifying at local competitions throughout the year. The State Summer Games is one of six annual statewide competitions for the athletes of Special Olympics Michigan. The Special Olympics Michigan programs are offered at no cost to the athletes or their families. The State Summer Games are proudly presented by SpartanNash, the only Statewide Premier Gold Medal Sponsor of Special Olympics Michigan.

    The premier fundraising event for the Special Olympics Michigan State Basketball Finals is the "Athletes Like Audrey" luncheon held each spring. It honors Mike and Sue Jandernoa's granddaughter Audrey Jandernoa and other children and adults with intellectual disabilities. This year's event will be held on Tuesday, June 7 at the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel's Pantlind Ballroom from noon to 1:30 p.m. Tickets are $100 each or $1,000 for eight tickets plus a table sponsorship.     This Bicycle Event takes place on June 11th at the MSP Training Academy. Please arrive at 8:30 a.m. for registration as wheels are down at 9:00 a.m. This is a 3 hour bike ride and you decide the distance. Enjoy smooth pavement and no vehicular traffic. This event is limited to the first 50 riders that register. Must be 18. Slower traffic stays right and a 25 mph speed limit. Event will happen rain or shine. $40 per rider.
