Special Olympics Haiti Rebuilds Through Camp Shriver

六月 21, 2010

In an effort to rebuild a strong and robust Special Olympics Haiti, Camp Shriver is slated to launch in five cities across the country, starting July 5. The sports day camps for people with intellectual disabilities--named after the founder of Special Olympics, the late Eunice Kennedy Shriver--will run for four weeks in Petionville, Carrefour, Jacmel, Les Cayes and Cape Haitian.

300x200 Meeting in Haiti

Special Olympics Chairman and CEO Tim Shriver meets in Haiti with local Special Olympics officials before announcing the launch of five sports camps for people with intellectual disabilities.

Special Olympics Chairman and CEO Tim Shriver and his daughter Rosie Shriver will be in Haiti on Thursday, June 24 to announce the launch of five Camp Shrivers. Follow their trip through Haiti.

Camp Shriver is an opportunity for people with intellectual disabilities to learn new sports skills, improve performance, participate in individual and team sports, build friendships and have fun with partners who are trained as Camp Shriver volunteers. Learn more about Camp Shriver.

Due to the unrelenting support and determination from the leadership of Special Olympics Caribbean, Special Olympics Haiti and Special Olympics International, an estimated 300 athletes with intellectual disabilities will participate in five sports including, football bocce, basketball, table tennis and dance. Athletes will receive food, T-shirts and sporting equipment; post Camp Shriver, all sports materials and equipment will be donated to Haitian schools to help sustain a strong Special Olympics Haiti Program in the wake of January’s devastating earthquake.

Funding for Camp Shriver in Haiti was provided, in part, by generous donations from Special Olympics Programs around the globe and individuals from as far away as Botswana. The Australian High Commission helped purchase equipment for the Camps and further funding sources are being explored through USAID.

Camp Shriver furthers the mission, vision and spirit of Special Olympics and fully supports the strategic goals and objectives of the movement. The Camp will enhance the quality of Special Olympics sports and sports training while improving the individual performance of the athletes involved. Camp Shriver will also initiate and build on lasting friendships between and among campers and volunteers.
