First Special Olympics Open Games in Lviv

The first Special Olympics Open Games took place on October 3-5 in Lviv. During the 2-days competitions 54 sets of medals were awarded to athletes that competed in four sports were played, including: swimming, table tennis, football and floor ball.View Story The first Special Olympics Open Games took place on October 3-5 in Lviv. During the 2-days competitions 54 sets of medals were awarded to athletes that competed in four sports were played, including: swimming, table tennis, football and floor ball. 22 delegations from 10 regions of Ukraine and delegations, from Poland and Kazakhstan, with more than 250 participants took part in the Games. The Games were held within the framework of the hosted by Special Olympics – Lviv Region project. These Games were and organized with by NGO SAMI and with the support of the Lviv City Council, Lviv Regional Council, Lviv Regional State Administration and Lviv State University of Physical Culture, which fully provided the Games with students-volunteers who played a significant role in the success of fully held the Games. It should be noted that this is The first edition time when the competition on such scale and level hosted by Lviv is held in Ukraine lead to The next year II SO Open Games to will be held in May 2015 and traditionally they will be held in West Ukraine - Lviv.​

Special Olympics Israel - Unified League - Pairs

The first round of the Unified League was held on Friday, February 21, 2014. Unified League is a special and unique project that kicked off activities a few weeks ago, in the wake of a cooperation agreement signed between the Israel Bowling Association and Special Olympics Israel.View Story The first round of the Unified League was held on Friday, February 21, 2014. Unified League is a special and unique project that kicked off activities a few weeks ago, in the wake of a cooperation agreement signed between the Israel Bowling Association and Special Olympics Israel. The League will be held once a month until July, and will continue after the summer holidays with additional athletes and players who want to join in the activities. 24 Special Olympics Athletes and 24 Players from 5 clubs of Israel Bowling Federation came from far and wide to the competition held at the Petach Tikva Bowling Center. The Bowling Association players and the Special Olympics athletes played together in a pair format, two pairs on each lane. In each League round, each pair will be allocated to a lane with another pair, which will provide an opportunity for all the participants, from all over the country, to get to know one another. Furthermore, the Club players coach the Special Olympics athletes on a weekly basis, outside of the League competition (each pair at its home club), in order to advance the Athletes, both from a professional aspect as well as from the social aspect (such as: Collaborating as a pair during the game, etc.).

Living and playing unified in Attica

There was amazing energy and excitement in Attica 22-23 February 2014 as young people from Athens met up with Special Olympics Hellas athletes in so-called Mainstream Schools National Games in Aquatics.View Story There was amazing energy and excitement in Attica 22-23 February 2014 as young people from Athens met up with Special Olympics Hellas athletes in so-called Mainstream Schools National Games in Aquatics. The Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs included, for the first time, Special Olympics athletes in Mainstream Schools National Games in Aquatics. The result was a celebration of youth activation that gathered youth together so they could all proclaim “Ime Mesa!” (I’m in!). The President of Special Olympics Hellas, Mrs Joanna Despotopoulou, concluded the day’s events by thanking all those involved, saying “When we play and live unified we create a society where everyone is respected and valued, regardless of their abilities.” At the closing, Mrs Despotopoulou was joined by the President of the Hellenic Federation of Aquatics, Mr Diathesopoulos Dimitrios, to present Certificates of Appreciation to all Special Olympics Hellas athletes.

A Unified Bowling Project in Israel

After months of preparation, a special, unique and important project has been rolled out – the Unified Bowling League of the Special Olympics bowlers and the bowlers of the Israeli Bowling federation.View Story After months of preparation, a special, unique and important project has been rolled out – the Unified Bowling League of the Special Olympics bowlers and the bowlers of the Israeli Bowling federation. The unified project is the result of a cooperation agreement signed in November 2013 between the two organizations. The league is held in a Pairs format with the pair comprising one Special Olympics player and one Bowling federation player. The Bowling federation players will train the Special Olympics players as part of the project and every few weeks they will meet at one of the Bowling Centers around Israel to hold national league games. We wish all the participants in the project great success and thank the Bowling federation players who volunteered for this noble activity.

Unified Floorball Demo teaches a Valuable Lesson

Special Olympics Czech Republic Unified Floorball teams Benesov and Sedlec compete a demo match at the IFF Women's World Floorball Championships.

1:0 was the final score of an exciting Special Olympics Unified Floorball demonstration game at the International Floorball Federation World’s Women Championships in the Czech Republic.View Story 1:0 was the final score of the exciting Special Olympics Unified Floorball demonstration game which took place during the International Floorball Federation World’s Women Championships in Brno Arena in the Czech Republic on December 8th. This was the first time for a Unified Floorball match to be played in Brno and the spectators were not disappointed with the competitive spirit and fair play between the two teams Benesov and Sedlec. Both teams are trained under Head Coach Stanislav Urban. “We are thrilled to showcase the talents and skills of Special Olympics athletes during one of the top events on of the year on the world floorball calendar” said Merita Braun, Information and Anti-doping Manager at the International Floorball Federation. “In such tense situations like a World Championship where there is a lot at stake, Special Olympics athletes remind us of the joy in game of floorball and the friendships to be made.”
