Africa

Initiated in the Africa region in 1979 with the founding of Special Olympics Kenya, Special Olympics has 21 accredited programs with nearly 120,000 athletes with intellectual disabilities. Special Olympics addresses the needs of African people with an intellectual disability in the areas of sport, health, education and leadership.  Special Olympics contributes significantly in addressing the correlation between disability and poverty, a key issue for the continent.

Special Olympics Nambia encourages youth to Play Unified!

By Ms.Esther Kambala

Special Olympics Namibia (SON) hosted an inclusive camp targeting youth with and without an intellectual disability. The summit took place from the 29th -30th of November 2013 at the Hodygos Conference Centre, just outside Windhoek.View Story Special Olympics Namibia (SON) hosted an inclusive camp targeting youth with and without an intellectual disability. The summit took place from the 29th -30th of November 2013 at the Hodygos Conference Centre, just outside Windhoek. A total of 50 youth attended and were supervised by staff members and volunteers. The excited group got to camp overnight and engaged in a number of team building activities. The Special Olympics motto of Play Unified, Live Unified was intrinsic to the messaging for the summit and the youth were encouraged to become ambassadors for Special Olympics and to help spread the messaging of inclusion amongst their peers. As the summit fell so close to the 1st of December, International Aids Day, the youth participated in an art session to create posters encouraging prevention and promoting acceptance and inclusion of people with Aids.

Camp Shriver, A Unified Camp in South Africa

By Nyeleti Shilenge

Playing and interacting with people with Intellectual Disabilities was very nice and challenging. I enjoyed every moment and learnt a lot from them.View Story I have never felt so welcomed within such a big group. The camp is the best I ever attended, thank you for inviting us. Playing and interacting with people with Intellectual Disabilities was very nice and challenging. I enjoyed every moment and learnt a lot from them. With such events I am hoping people within our community will stop hiding their kids and bring them out to such occasions, this is because people think they should not be part of such.

Bienvenido de nuevo al Movimiento, Olimpiadas Especiales Ghana!

By William Awumey

Unified Football Gives Victor Lifetime Opportunities

By Matovu Andrew Victor

Through Unified Football, I had a chance to meet and get many new friends. We also had so much fun and joy during the Unified event held in the Royal Bofikeng National in Rustenburg, South Africa.View Story The journey to the Unified 7-a-side football tournament in South Africa to attend the Unity Cup was very interesting to me because of many things that happened in South Africa. First of all I had a chance to reach and see many places that I had not seen before in South Africa, for example Pretoria, the Sun City, the Royal Bafokeng Nation and many others that I was just reading about in books, magazines, newspapers and what I saw on television back home in Uganda.  Through Unified Football, I had a chance to meet and get many new friends who up to this day are communicating on Facebook and we exchange e-mails. We also had so much fun and joy during the Unified event held in the Royal Bofikeng National in Rustenburg, South Africa. We had to play very hard and display our talents because all the teams at this tournament were high level Unified teams. Another great achievement is that I got a chance to be seen on the international South African television channel called Super Sport which is a dream to many sports people and it has happened to me. I only knew about my appearance on television when I returned to Uganda when I got back home as it was the first thing everyone was telling me about because they had seen me on television. Wow, to this day, I still cannot believe it I made it on international television. I also had an opportunity to play in a massive stadium that was used as one of the FIFA World Cup stadiums in South Africa in 2010, the Bafokeng Stadium. Not many people have the opportunity to go into this stadium unless there is a football match to watch but I actually played on the field! Thanks to Special Olympics.  Finally, I am again so privileged to have played on a Gold medal team. Special Olympics Uganda men won Gold and this changed my life because it was my dream to a have a Gold medal in my sports lifetime.

About Matovu Andrew Victor:My name is Matovu Andrew Victor, one of the Unified football team players from Uganda who attended the Unified 7-a-side tournament in South Africa, in Rustenburg.
