Initié dans la région Africaine en 1979 avec la fondation de Special Olympics Kenya, Special Olympics International a 21 programmes accrédités avec presque Cent vingt mille athlètes avec déficience intellectuelle. Special Olympics répond au besoin de cette population africaine avec déficience intellectuelle dans les domaines du sport, la santé, l’éducation et le leadership. Special Olympics contribue de manière significative en s’adressant à la corrélation entre la déficience et la pauvreté, deux facteurs majeures sur le continent.
