Millett to Represent USA at "Special Olympics Unity Cup"

juin 21, 2010

One of the 16 Special Olympics athletes selected for the first-ever, Special Olympics Unity Cup Presented by Coca-Cola is Matthew Millett from South Grafton, Massachusetts, who will be representing the United States.

300x200 Matt Millett with the Soccer team

Special Olympics athlete Matthew Millet posses with the 2010 World Cup United States National Team.

Matt is 31 years old and has been playing soccer since he was only five.  He has earned the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to travel to South Africa next week and play in this global, unified soccer match to be played just prior to a 2010 FIFA World Cup™ quarterfinal game in Cape Town Stadium on Saturday, July 3rd.  He was surprised with the news during a routine practice with his Special Olympics unified soccer team back in late April, and celebrated with family, friends, Special Olympics Massachusetts executives and representatives from the local professional soccer team, the New England Revolution.

Matt plays fullback and is an exceptionally talented soccer player, but he won the honor to participate not just on skill alone but due to his tremendous character and leadership demonstrated both on and off the field.  Matt also serves as an athlete advisor to the Special Olympics Massachusetts Board of Directors.  Since receiving the news, Matt also had the incredible opportunity to meet the US Men’s National soccer team in Connecticut before they departed for South Africa.  He met the star players and coaches and even was able to be a part of a great team photo.  After Matt returns from playing soccer at the Unity Cup in South Africa, he will also travel to the 2010 Special Olympics USA National Games in Nebraska next month, proudly playing soccer for his state’s team.
