South Carolina’s Unified Soccer Team, dubbed by its fans as the “Dream Team,” has been training and competing together for the past 3 years. This summer, the team will pack its bags and head to Lincoln, Nebraska to compete against 9 others that were selected from around the country to compete during the 2010 Special Olympics US National Games.
With ages ranging from 15-21, all members are students at Sumter High School. They are a “team” in every sense of the word, but after years of playing together, the athletes and partners have become much more than just teammates. The friendships between athletes and partners created through unified sports have impacted the school climate, the community perspective, and the future acceptance and inclusion of children and adults with intellectual disabilities.
Earning a bronze medal last fall at the SC State Games, this team is no stranger to victory. With continued determination and focus, the National Games are sure to be an outstanding culmination of both teamwork and success for the South Carolina’s “Dream Team.”
