Colorado Youth Committee Hits the Ground Running

octobre 22, 2010

On September 26, 2010, Denver Broncos Linebacker #92, Elvis Dumervil generously provided Special Olympics Colorado with the opportunity of a lifetime inviting 14 SOCO student Athletes and Unified Sports® Partners to attend the Broncos vs. Colts game at INVESCO Field.

The SOCO Project UNIFY® Youth Activation Committee was chosen to go in recognition of their hard work and incredible accomplishments this year.  They were driven to the game in a hummer stretch limo and then personally escorted out onto the field for the pre-game activities which included personally meeting Elvis, receiving an autographed Denver Broncos jersey and taking pictures.

The SOCO Youth Activation Committee has many new and exciting things planned for the 2010-2011 school year.  The members will play an active role in the recruitment and selection of 20 new school aged youth both with and without disabilities to become the newest members of our 2010-2011 Youth Activation Committee.  Each Member of the committee will co-facilitate our 2nd annual SOCO Global Messenger Training on December 10-12, taking on leadership roles throughout the training including organizing logistics, planning and running team-building activities, leading a variety of informational sessions, developing resource materials and more.

Many of the YAC members also have individual inclusive sports projects planned for this year including skills camps and pre-season trainings open to all Special Olympics Colorado Athletes and Unified Sports® Partners.

The youth leaders are organizing and recruiting peer groups from their schools and communities to participate as “Fans in the stands” at 3 area and state competitions including our Fall Classic on November 13th, State Basketball on March 12th, and Summer Games on June 4th-5th.

Youth teams are also promoting participation in a variety of upcoming events to student senate/government, sports teams and clubs within their schools encouraging their fellow peers to take part in a variety of initiatives including:

•A statewide SOCO Polar Plunge High School Rival Challenge to be held on December 4, 2010- Statewide high schools including Cherry Creek HS, Grandview HS, Smokey Hill HS, Palmer HS, Conifer HS and more will be challenging each other in a variety of areas including who raises the most money, who has the most students take the plunge, who has the best costume and more.

•Statewide R-word campaigns to be implemented on March 2, 2011 in their homes schools as well as local elementary and middle schools throughout the community creating awareness about the r-word and encouraging their peers, school administration, and community members to take the pledge.

•Implementing new inclusive partners clubs such as BRIDGES, OPEN ARMS, and THE PACK promoting inclusive activities among students with and without disabilities in a variety of schools including Conifer HS, Cherry Creek HS, Palmer HS and Smokey Hill HS.
