Special Olympics Europe Eurasia Sports Conference

The Special Olympics Europe Eurasia Sports Conference was held in Malta from 12th to 16th October 2011.

75 National Sports Directors, Coordinators and GMS experts from 42 countries attended Special Olympics Europe- Eurasia Regional Conference in Malta on October 12-16 in addition to 29 Unified Sports leaders. 

The Conference was followed by Competition & Training Advisory Committee (CTAC) meeting, the team who contributed a lot in developing Conference Agenda and conducting additional part : New Sports Directors (less than 2 years of service) 8 hours course for 16 new Sports Directors attending the Conference. CTAC group nominated also new SOEE Sports Advisors in 17 summer sports for the next 4 years term.  In addition 10 other persons will assist these Sports Advisors. All of them will also serve in SOI Sports Resource Teams (SRT).  Also CTAC approved 2012 SOEE Sports Calendar and 2013 sports priorities.

Discussed was also sports and quotas for 2014 European Games. During the Conference elected were new CTAC members : Natascha Bruers ( the Netherlands), Liesbet Marsoul (Belgium) as well as re-nominated were Aldo Doninelli (Switzerland) and Margaret Strzalkowska (Poland).

All Conference participants had opportunity to hear about 2011- 2015 SOI Sports Strategy presented by Ase Torheim and SOI Coaches Education plans by Aldis Berzins. Also Regional Sports strategy was presented by Mariusz Damentko, SOEE Sports Director.

Great addition to the Conference were presentations of international sports federations representatives: Addie Ophelders, President of European Tenpin Bowling Federation (ETBF), Nory Kruchten, President of European Swimming Federation (LEN), Isabel Gultresa, Euroleague Basketball CSR Senior Manager and Merita Bruun, Communication Manager of International Floorball Federation.

21 computer experts attended GMS 6 training conducted by Reuben Silva in separate track of the Conference. As the out come of this track selected was small core group of GMS European experts to conduct follow up GMS activities in the Region. 
Main topic of the Conference was training in SO event management by preparing and conducting SO Malta national Athletics competitions connected with GMS practical application. All Conference participants took specific role in the local organizing committee for 80 SO Malta athletes took part in 4 Athletics events.

All participants of the Conference expressed great appreciation and gratitude to Anna Caleja, SO Malta National Director, Elaine Bonnici, Sports Director, Desiree Bone and SO Malta volunteers and family members who hugely contributed in organization this Conference.
