Special Olympics Serbia held its national aquatics competition on 15 October 2011 in Pancevo, a town located on the outskirts of the capital Belgrade.  One hundred and fifty swimmers from 10 cities participated in the one-day event.  One of the highlights of the event was the presence of Nadja Higl, 2009 World Champion in the 200 m breaststroke, and hometown hero, and national sports icon.

The event included the 25 m, 50 m, 100 m breast stroke and free style, and the 200 m free style; and the 25 m breast and 25 m free style for low-ability athletes.

The local government provided the community sports complex free of charge to Special Olympics Serbia.  The Ministry of Youth and Sports supported the event. Coca Cola provided drinks and Lasta provided transport for the athletes.

Higl, who opened the competition, said during her remarks that she trained in the same swimming complex.  “I know for a fact that those of us who swim in this pool are all winners,” she said.

The Special Olympics event attracted the attention of national and local broadcasters and print journalists.
