Regional President & Managing Director, East Asia

Mary Gu

Mary Gu was named Regional President & Managing Director for Special Olympics East Asia in April 2011.  In this position, she oversees the day-to-day operations of the region, which serves athletes throughout East Asia, including China, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong, Korea and Macau. 

Mary is originally from China and started her career in the hospitality industry in 1995 when she started as the assistant to the General Manager of the Portman Shangri-La Hotel. In this role, Mary began to develop her strong interpersonal skills and her project management skills. In 1998, she was promoted to head of Government Relations and she held this role until 2003 during which time Mary became instrumental in organizing the visits of international political leaders such as U.S. Presidents George Bush Sr., Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter, officials from the U.S. State Department, and top officials from Chinese government bodies.

Mary served as Special Assistant to the Chairman of Shanghai Guo Sheng Group, a government investment organization.  In this role, Mary led various investment initiatives, representing the firm in foreign relations as well as in key projects that built the Shanghai or China image (The 2010 World Expo), aerospace, construction and a select number of charity organizations such as one launched with Yao Ming.
