September 03, 2011

More than 300 athletes from Special Olympics Thailand and Special Olympics Laos took part in the 2011 Central Regional Games in early September.

A Spirited Games

The athletes from 23 schools in 11 Thai provinces, and 20 Laos athletes competed in Track and Field, Bocce and Football over the two-day Games.  Strong volunteer support was provided by Mattel Bangkok and DT Group of Companies (DTG), as well as event sponsors Mattel Bangkok, Singha Beer and Thammasart University.

Special Olympics Thailand’s National Program is divided into four main regions of Central, North, South and Northeast. The Regional Games occur every other year, alternating with the National Games. Another two sub-regions—the Eastern Region located in Pattaya City and the three Southernmost Provinces centred in Pattani province hold annual games as well.

Day one of the Central Regional Games began with divisioning for the sports events and Health Promotion screening for the athletes in the morning, followed by competition in the afternoon.

Day two was a full-day of competition for all sports events, culminating in a Unified Football match and Closing Ceremony.
