CMS Employees Organise Mass Gatherings in Support of Special Olympics

November 09, 2011

Europe’s Key Landmarks to host the highlight event of CMS Cameron McKenna’s International CSR Week

Wednesday, November 9th 2011, London, UK:  On Thursday, November 10th 12.30pm (GMT)  employees from the European offices of the region’s leading provider of legal and tax services, CMS Cameron McKenna, will conduct simultaneous mass gatherings at some of Europe’s top landmarks to celebrate their support of Special Olympics, the world’s largest sports organization for people with learning disabilities. St Paul’s Cathedral in London, Edinburgh Castle, St Wenceslas Statue in Prague and Elizabeth Bridge in Budapest, are just some of the locations where employees will pose for photos, including a 20 foot giant shoe lace in support of the Wear the Laces for Special Olympics campaign, which helps raise funds to provide free year-round sports competitions and training to transform lives and build communities of inclusion, respect and acceptance, through the power of sport.

According to Robert Powell, Corporate Social Responsibility Manager at CMS Cameron McKenna’s London Headquarters: “We are delighted that Special Olympics has formed a key part of our International CSR week, dedicated to highlighting our employees’ efforts in pro-bono legal advice, volunteering and charitable fundraising. It is particularly exciting that our offices across Europe are participating at the same time as here in the UK, showing the European breadth of our partnership.”

The firm supports Special Olympics programmes in European countries matched to their offices and these include Great Britain, Bucharest (Romania), Budapest (Hungary), Kyiv (Ukraine) Prague (Czech Republic) and Warsaw (Poland).  There are some 5.5 million people with learning disabilities in the countries involved.

CMS Cameron McKenna has chosen Special Olympics as its charity of the year between May 2011 and May 2013. More than 600 employees across their offices in mainland Europe, as well as 1300 employees in Great Britain are working with Special Olympics through a variety of fundraising and volunteering initiatives, either supporting specific projects or by helping with the day to day running of sports clubs and their planned activities, events and competitions.  The fundraising target for the partnership across all regions is close to Euro 350,000.
In Great Britain, CMS is planning two years of fundraising events for Special Olympics Great Britain, ranging from Charity Runs, extreme sports and cycling challenges, adventure treks, in-house concerts, as well as monthly Pay Day Sweets sales.

CMS employees join high profile names such as Mick Hucknall of Simply Red, Brazilian Football legend Dani Alves, Prince Albert II of Monaco and UK Prime Minister David Cameron, in embracing the Wear the Laces for Special Olympics fundraising campaign. The campaign serves as a visual reminder of the need for respect, acceptance and inclusion for people with intellectual disabilities. The bright red specially designed Special Olympics shoe laces are available for purchase online at
