Group of ladies who have knitted and crocheted scarves for the Scarves for Programs.2012 Scarf Program
Adopt a Program
All in all, our goal is to receive nearly 42,000 scarves in order for all 40 Programs to reach their goals! To date, we are just shy of about 5,000 scarves overall from those Programs who have sent in their reports.
These Programs hold their State Winter Games, tournaments, other competitions and events at varying times throughout the year, and with different sports respectively. For this reason, the deadlines run between mid-December and early March - so that each Program can work to reach their goal in time to distribute their scarves at their events held in their state.
Each Program has a different deadline and a specific goal they are trying to reach. All of the Programs' goals, deadlines and shipping information is available on our website at Special Olympics USA Scarf Project. Programs set their goals based on the size of their Program, so that the athletes, coaches, families, volunteers and supporters can all be embraced by the meaning and unity of the Special Olympics USA Scarf Project.
Simply go to the drop down menu on the right side of our Home Page, select the Program you would like to learn more about, and click on the "Get More Information" button.
You can also visit the Project Guidelines page to view the participating Programs and deadlines in either Alphabetical or Chronological-by-Deadline order.
We have listed all of the Programs with goals in January 2012 and their goals. You will notice that some Programs have much larger goals than others - and oftentimes it is these Programs that need the most support from out of their own state - so please help us spread the word or consider "adopting" one of these larger Programs.
Feel free to support any Program you would like to - or as many as you like! We have begun to post how many scarves the Programs have received, and we will continue to do so as we receive their reports. The numbers are posted on each respective Programs page on the website. If there is not a number posted, we have not received a report.
If you have questions about the Programs participating, please visit the FAQ page on our website for answers.
Thank you for your kind support of the 2012 Special Olympics USA Scarf Project!
Stitcher Resources: Flyers
New to our website for 2012 is a "Stitcher Resources" section!
You can now download promotional flyers to help spread the word about the Special Olympics USA Scarf Project!
There are two different flyers - one for your knitting and crocheting guilds, and a more general one to use for posting at schools, church groups, community centers or wherever you think you might find some folks interested in knitting or crocheting a scarf for Special Olympics!

Love of Knitting Magazine features Special Olympics USA Scarf Project
If you haven't picked up your Winter 2011 issue of Love of Knitting Magazine yet - it's available at Barnes & Noble and other national booksellers and arts & crafts stores!
We were honored to collaborate with Kathy North of Designs by KN to create a custom pattern for Love of Knitting readers called the "Peak-to-Peak Scarf."
In the feature story, Kathy speaks to her inspiration behind the unique pattern, and the pattern is available both in the print edition and via download online at Love of Knitting.
We hope you enjoy and find this to be a fun pattern to add to your stitching accomplishments as well!
Here is a "peek" into Kathy's original design concept - you can view the finished project at the links above!
Thank You!
To our friends at Red Heart Yarns, for their help in creating the patterns, flyers and gift tags for the 2012 Special Olympics USA Scarf Project - and for helping make this project possible.
