Poland Kick-Off European Basketball Week with Press Conference

Special Olympics Poland kicked off their European Basketball Week with a press conference in Warsaw on November 24th followed by ten regional and local tournaments and a promotional appearance at the Asseco Prokom vs. FC Barcelona Regal Euroleague game on December 1st.

In attendance at the press conference were Poland’s National Basketball Federation, the Tauron Basket League and the Ford Germanz Ekstraklasa League.  Grzegorz Bachanski, President of the Polish Basketball Federation, once again confirmed their support behind the eight annual Special Olympics European Basketball Week saying; "I am very proud to continue our partnership with Special Olympics Poland.  European Basketball Week is a fantastic event and we are very happy to be lending our support to help create and expand opportunities for players with intellectual disabilities.”

Jacek Jakubowski, President of PLK (Polish Men's Basketball League) and Grzegorz Ziembicki, Vice President of PLKK (Polish Women's Basketball League) also in attendance at the press conference announced they would be dedicating the 15th round of the men’s Tauron Basket League and 11th round of the women’s Ford Germaz Ekstraklasa League to Special Olympics Poland. 

Ten regional and local tournaments were held by Special Olympics Poland throughout the week as part of European Basketball Week.  A massive 810 Special Olympics athletes and countless Special Olympics volunteers participated in these events.

On December 1st, 35 athletes, parents and coaches from various Special Olympics Poland clubs travelled to Gdynia to attend the Euroleague game dedicated to Special Olympics between Asseco Prokom and FC Barcelona Regal.  Prior to tip-off a pre-game presentation took place with Special Olympics athletes entering the court carrying a Special Olympics Poland flag while the being introduced by the presenter.  The Euroleague players wore “Basketball for Everyone” t-shirts and posed for pictures with the athletes.  Asseco Prokom Captain, Donatas Motiejunas addressed the crowd of spectators on the importance of creating and expanding opportunities so all can enjoy basketball.
