Ukraine Basketball Week Focuses on Children Under 15 Years

December 14, 2011

2011 European Basketball Week (Nov 24th to December 4th) in Ukraine took a specific focus on providing opportunities in basketball for children under the age of 15. And it was thanks to the involvement of the Committee for Physical Education, the Ukrainian Ministry of Sports Education, and Youth, Ukraine as well as the support of the National Basketball Federations of Ukraine that the festival enjoyed its highest participation rate in the Ukraine to date.

1,000 Special Olympics basketball athletes from special boarding schools in 11 regions of the Ukraine participated in Ukraine European Basketball Week while 100 coaches and 200 volunteers were on hand at the week long event to offer their assistance and support to all athletes.

On December 3rd, International Day of Persons with Disabilities, five large competitions in five regions of Ukraine were organised with more than 210 Special Olympics athletes taking part.  During the day long celebration the Ministry of Social Protection awarded President and Acting National Director of Ukraine with an Honorary Diploma for his contribution to the protection of the rights of persons with disabilities.

The final competition of the Ukraine Basketball Week, the National Basketball Tournament, was held on December 15 and December 16 in Cherkassy.  Ten Special Olympics teams from eight regions of Ukraine competed for the title in the Sokil sports complex while a seminar for 14 coaches ran simultaneously.
