Special Olympics Europe/Eurasia has entered into partnership with the International Floorball Federation (IFF) with the official signing of an agreement between Denis Doolan, Acting President of SOEE, and Filip Suman, Vice President of IFF, during the Women's World Floorball Championships in St. Gallen, Switzerland on December 9th.
At these same Championships, a stadium audience of more than 2200 enjoyed a demonstration match between Special Olympics teams from Austria and Switzerland held during the semi-final half time break. The game was also included on the broadcast of Swiss TV. SOEE convey their appreciation to John Liljelund, IFF Secretary General and Merita Bruun, Communications Manager for making this demonstration match possible.
Floorball (referred to in some countries as Unihockey or Salybandy) is the youngest Sport to join Special Olympics and is played mostly in Europe. 2000 Special Olympics athletes in 17 countries worldwide play Floorball. The number is growing rapidly and Special Olympics celebrated its first European Floorball Cup in 2010 and this sport will be offered first time during the 2013 Special Olympics World Winter Games in Korea.
