A ground breaking British invention developed specifically for children with disabilities is helping athletes make music at Special Olympics.

Athletes at the Athens 2011 Special Olympics World Summer Games in June, were offered the opportunity to try a completely new kind of musical instrument invented in the UK called the Skoog.

Skoogmusic Ltd, founded by Doctors Schögler & Skulina, creators of the Skoog, has donated two of these unique inventions to Special Olympics. Supported by local community musicians trained in the art of Skoog, athletes were able to try this revolutionary new piece of technology for themselves.

After the fun of the Summer Games the Skoog’s were donated to the Special Olympics Motor Activities Training Programme (MATP) for use at upcoming Special Olympics events.

Mary Davis, Managing Director of Special Olympics Europe/Eurasia: “We warmly welcome this donation from Skoogmusic and their participation in our 2011 World Summer Games. At Special Olympics we work towards releasing the full potential of athletes with intellectual disabilities. The Skoog is a wonderful invention which is accessible to everyone and gives people with disabilities of all ages an opportunity to express themselves and develop new skills.”

Soft, spongy, bright and bouncy, the Skoog is not just one musical instrument - its lots of instruments all squeezed into a multi-coloured box of technology. The Skoog team provided a fun and stimulating activity to help athletes relax, support team building and engage with the wider cultural aspects of Special Olympics.

With the support of Scottish Enterprise and Special Olympics Hellas, the team at Skoogmusic set up a Skoog Zone in the delegates area open to all to spend time getting to grips with the Skoog. Watch video highlights here:  http://skoogmusic.com/videos/special%20olympics

“We are really excited about being part of Special Olympics this year. Inclusion, Integration and Education are at the heart of the Special Olympics movement and these core principles are central to what we strive for at Skoogmusic. We hope the Skoog’s we have donated will continue to be part of the year round activities at Special Olympics,” stated Ben Schögler.

“A new instrument for established musicians, and new ways for all to play,” stated Professor Nigel Osborne MBE, Reid Professor of Music and advisor to the Warchild charity.
