Munich 2012 got a significant financial boost with the donation by the Bavarian Government of €366,000 to Special Olympics Germany. €250,000 of this allocation will assist with the staging of the National Games in Munich from May 20th until May 26th 2012.

Bavaria’s Minister for Social Affairs, Christine Haderthauer: “I am delighted that we can support the Special Olympics National Games event in Munich with this allocation.  5,000 athletes with intellectual disabilities will take part and experience the Olympic spirit of togetherness and inclusion. Special Olympics is of outstanding importance as it allows children and adults with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to participate in regular training and competitions and to experience the joy of friendship and fun.  I wish all athletes and their families and coaches the best of luck for the Games in May.”

“This funding means a great deal to us in Special Olympics Germany and to our athletes,” stated Gernot Mittler, Chairman of Special Olympics Germany. “We thank the Bavarian Government, especially Prime Minister Horst Seehofer and Minister Christine Haderthauer, for their personal commitment to Special Olympics.  The significant allocation by the Government confirms the importance of Special Olympics and the National Games to the Government and its commitment to maintain its support.  We are also deeply grateful for the €140,000 allocation by the German Ministry of Health for the development of the Special Olympics Healthy Athlete Programme in Germany.  €15,000 of this funding will go towards staging the Healthy Athlete event at the National Games in Munich.”
