Over 400 athletes competed in Switzerland's National Winter Games in perfect conditions taking home 247 medals.

Olympic spirit shone through at Switzerland's National Winter Games

Switzerland's Special Olympics National Winter Games 2012, brought together 420 athletes in Lenk, in the Bernese Oberland, to participate in alpine and cross country skiing, snowboarding and floorball. Athletes from all over Switzerland and teams from Austria, Germany, Monaco and Liechtenstein took part in the Games which were held from March 22nd – 25th 2012.

The Games were a huge success as thousands of supporters attended competitions daily to cheer on the athletes who took home an impressive 84 gold; 82 silver and 81 bronze medals over the four days.

In his address during the closing ceremony Stephan Mills, Director of the Board of Special Olympics Switzerland said: ‘Never before in my life did I feel such deep emotions as I have in the last four days.”

The delegation that will represent Switzerland in the World Special Olympics Winter Games to be held in Pyeong Chang, South Korea in 2013 was officially announced during the closing ceremony. 31 athletes and 20 coaches will travel to Korea to represent their country in 2013.

The closing ceremony also saw the Olympic flag being handed over to the Head of Berne’s Town Council, where Switzerland’s 2014 Special Olympics National Summer Games will take place.
