This year the Special Olympics Lions Clubs International Opening Eyes program has been included as a subject on the Bachelor of Optometry at the University of Munich.

GERMANY: This is a hugely significant milestone in the teaching and practice of eye health care for people with intellectual disabilities.

Almost €20,000 was used to establish this academic training program for students of Optometry at the University of Munich. It brings the study and application of eye care screenings, treatment and services for people with intellectual disabilities to the fore.

“In the framework of the academic education at our University, Healthy Athletes has proven a real driver for higher education,” says Professor Werner Eisenbarth, University of Munich.

“An integral part of this program will involve students volunteering at the Opening Eyes event at the upcoming Special Olympics Germany National Summer Games in Munich. This volunteer work as part of their studies will offer the students invaluable hands on experience in a real environment with Special Olympics Athletes,” added Prof. Eisenbarth.

Prof. Werner Eisenbarth, who received specialist training from Special Olympics Clinical Director in Germany, Stefan Schwarz, is a frequent volunteer eye care Optomologist at several Special Olympics events throughout Germany. He holds a deep commitment to Special Olympics and our athletes.

The German Special Olympics National Summer Games in Munich will take place between May 21st and May 25th 2012 involving 5000 athletes competing in 19 sports.
