Hungarian athletes demonstrate their skills at the 31st LEN European Swimming Championships

Before an audience of 3,000 spectators, Special Olympics athletes from Hungary participated in two demonstration races at the 31st European Swimming Championships recently held in Debrecen, Hungary. The demonstration included a backstroke race for the female team and a freestyle race for the male team.

The Special Olympics Hungary athletes were warmly welcomed to the event by President of the European Swimming Federation/ Ligue Européenne de Natation (LEN), Mr Nory Kruchten. A special treat for the athletes was when they were presented with European Swimming Championship mascots by Hungarian Olympic and World Champion swimmer Ms Agnes Kovacs.

Since 2006 LEN have been working in partnership with Special Olympics in promoting more opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities in swimming. This is the eight time to date that Special Olympics athletes have had the opportunity to demonstrate their skills to the wider European swimming community.

Special Olympics has a number of partnership with European sports federations including European Athletics, FIBA Europe, UEFA, Tennis Europe, European Athletics, European Gymnastics Federation (UEG), European Bowling Federation (ETBF), International Floorball Federation (IFF), and European Volleyball Confederation (CEV) designed to promote respect, acceptance and inclusion in each respective sport.
