Laura's Story

Laura Mitchell, a 27 year old Special Olympics swimmer from Bromley in London became the star of her community when she took on the role as official torchbearer for the Olympic Flame during its final relay week as it made its way to Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympics.

Crowds and Cameras!

The turnout and support was spectacular as people lined the streets to cheer on Laura in glorious sunshine on July 23rd. As Laura stepped off the Torch Relay bus she was a true star as people waited to have their pictures taken with her and wished her well. As she took the Torch firmly in both hands she set off at a brisk pace through cheering crowds amid a sea of flags and cameras.

Experience of a Lifetime

Dozens of friends and family were there to support her, including Martin Chittell from Avenues Trust (individually planned support in residential settings for people with learning disabilities and mental health issues). Avenues Trust nominated Laura to become Torchbearer.

“The crowds were amazing and I was so excited to carry the torch. I enjoyed every minute," said Laura.

“We're so grateful to everyone for the part they've played in enriching Laura's life,” said Ruth, Laura's mother.

Laura was also selected to work as a volunteer during the London Olympics. She is working at the Events Services in the Olympic Park.

65 athletes and 5 volunteers from Special Olympics Great Britain and Ireland served as Olympic Flame Torchbearers over the course of the 70 days and 8,000 miles Torch Relay.
