Special Olympics Tajikistan and UNICEF working together

Important project focused on early childhood development initiatives in support of children with intellectual disabilities in Tajikistan.

Five Month Project

Special Olympics Tajikistan and UNICEF Tajikistan are working together on a five-month project to advance early childhood development initiatives in support of children with intellectual disabilities.

The two organizations will hold training seminars and activities for approximately 120 family members, trainers, educators and volunteers in Dushanbe and Khujand based on the Special Olympics Young Athlete™ initiative.  Sports activities have been arranged in each city for 50 children with intellectual disabilities. Young Athletes is a unique sports and play program for children with intellectual disabilities between the ages of 2 ½ and 7 years old. The initiative helps develop motor skills, hand-eye coordination and social skills in a highly participatory environment.

The grant enabled Special Olympics Tajikistan to purchase training equipment and to produce  booklets and methodology guides.

The seminars have attracted representatives from government and international organizations. Ms. Sheama Barkin Kuzmin represented UNICEF Tajikistan.  Also attending was a Young Athlete expert from Special Olympics Kazakhstan. The project concludes in December 2012.
