Youth Leaders Working Together

Despite challenging weather conditions with a snow storm hitting Germany, 30 youth leaders aged 12-20 with and without intellectual disabilities from ten Special Olympics Programs gathered for a Youth Working session in Frankfurt, Germany December 7 - 9. Exchange of best practice and ideas from new and established youth leaders was on the agenda as well as broad youth leadership training. The meeting was facilitated by SOEE staff and volunteer youth leaders in co-operation with an external expert from ENGSO Youth (European Non Governmental Sport Organization – Youth).

“I enjoyed this meeting- the exchange with peers with and without intellectual disabilities was great; we will all stay in touch now via facebook and so on. This group is very motivating, I have lots of new ideas” said one participant.

This seminar was kindly supported by the Mattel Foundation.

During the event the results of the election for the 2012-2014 Special Olympics Europe Eurasia Youth Advisory Committee were announced. Congratulations to the new committee members: Bettina Lehmann and Dennis Kutzner, SO Germany. René Tippl and Darius-Laurentiu Sovan, Georg Diemat, Athlete, SO Austria. Flip Paunovic and Luka Kurcubic, SO Serbia. Spyros Nikitas and Elissavet Stergides, SO Hellas. The Regional Advisory Committee was established with the first election at the European Youth Summit in Warsaw, Poland 2010. The term is two years, therefore elections took place again this fall and winter amongst youth leaders across the region. Committee members may be approached to represent the Advisory Committee and all youths in SOEE at official events or presentations. The Board will meet regularly online, by phone and face to face throughout the two year term to exchange perspectives and experiences to progress regional youth activation work and projects.
