The sport of athletics encourages athletes of all abilities and ages to compete at their optimum level. Through the track-and-field-based athletics training program, participants can develop total fitness to compete in any sport. As with all Special Olympics sports, athletics offers athletes the opportunity to learn through skill development and competitive settings and to be involved in large social settings.

Special Olympics Southern California 2014 Summer Invitational Games

Los Juegos de verano de Special Olympics Sur de California 2014, se llevaron a cabo del 5 al 9 de Junio, en la Universidad del Sur de California.View Story The Special Olympics Southern California 2014, Summer Games took place from 5 to 9 June at the University of Southern California. With the participation of 1,200 athletes from 28 SO Southern California local programs and 150 athletes from 12 international programs including the following countries: SO Taipei China, Costa Rica SO, SO Egypt, Britain SO, SO Indonesia, Iraq SO, SO Macau, Mexico SO, SW Japan, SW Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates SO, SO Hong Kong. They participated in 6 Sports: Swimming, Athletics, Basketball, Bocce, Gymnastics and Special Golf. Special Olympics Baja Mexico California represented our country in two sports, Athletics and Swimming, with a delegation of 23 athletes, 2 coaches, 2 assistant coaches, 2 auxiliaries 1 delegate and 1 assistant delegate. They return to Mexico with 11 Gold, 18 Silver, and 4 Bronze medals.

I've been involved in Special Olympics since 1973, in track and field. Then when Unified Sports came in I played basketball and softball. It's hard to put my story into words because I had a long career. Youths help Special Olympics Albania organize first Unified event during Football Week

The 2014 Special Olympics Albania Football Week was part of the first Unified Sports event that was organized in Albania in mid-May. Special Olympics Albania trained 90 Unified players in Football, Athletics and Table Tennis.View Story The 2014 Special Olympics Albania Football Week was part of the first Unified Sports event that was organized in Albania in mid-May. Special Olympics Albania trained 90 Unified players in Football, Athletics and Table Tennis. Around 100 youths and 50 volunteers including the Peace Corps, teachers, and families took part. Six Unified teams were composed of youths from local special school “Luigj Gurakuqi” and the special center “Help Life” (“Ndihmoni Jete”) while 45 partners represented two local mainstream schools. It started with a joyful opening ceremony with music and a dancing program prepared by the Unified players. Youths took part in organizing other aspects of the event, creating a joyful atmosphere. The event was broadcast locally and was reported in the daily sports newspaper. Local competitions also were organized in special schools and special centers in Elbasani, Pogradeci and Korca with about 200 participants. A coach seminar was organized in Tirana for 15 participants.

Special Olympics Bangladesh’s National Games will welcome an estimated 800 athletes and 100 Unified Sports® partners across Bangladesh. Special Olympics National Games 2014 Melbourne

The 10th Special Olympics Australia National Games will involve more than 1,200 athletes of all levels competing in 16 Olympic and demonstration sports and events. These Games offer the opportunity for athletes to be selected to represent Australia at the Special Olympics World Summer Games in Los Angeles in 2015. For the majority of competitors, the National Games in Melbourne represents the culmination of four years of competing at local, regional and state level. Competing in the same world-class venues as their Olympic heroes, our Special Olympics athletes will perform in front of their proud parents, friends, supporters and the wider community. Athletes of all abilities will compete in 16 Olympic style sports including AFL and netball as demonstration sports across iconic sporting venues in Melbourne. Other special events include: Healthy Athletes Program, Young Athlete Program (2–7 year old), Athlete Leadership & Ambassador Program, Family Functions Social Outing, Law Enforcement Torch Run, Opening and Closing Ceremonies

World Summer Games Los Angeles 2015

In July of 2015 more than 7,000 athletes from 170 countries will come to Los Angeles, California for the Special Olympics World Summer Games and enjoy 10 days full of joy, friendship and competition. Athletes will compete in 22 sports. The event expects to attract 500,000 spectators and 30,000 volunteers and 3,000 coaches.
