Basketball is one of the top sports at Special Olympics. Players take it up at all ages and at all abilities, from young players learning to handle the ball and keep it under control while dribbling to older, more experienced players who have the moves and know the strategies to play challenging ball.

It's also one of the favorite sports for the Special Olympics Unified Sports initiative, when players with and without intellectual disabilities form teams to play other unified teams. It's a learning experience that's also a lot of fun.

French Basketball Legend Humbled by Antwerp 2014

By Maureen Rabbitt

Hugues Occansey signed as an Ambassador for Special Olympics France in 2013.

'Life changing’ is how French basketball legend Hugues Occansey describes his experiences in coaching the French Female Unified Basketball team at the Special Olympics European Summer Games 2014.View Story 'Life changing’ is how French basketball legend Hugues Occansey describes his experiences in coaching the French Female Unified Basketball team at the Special Olympics European Summer Games 2014. “Now I have another vision about the athletes. It has been a very good experience for me personally. I hope I will be a better person after these Games” he explained. Occansey, who played 83 times for the men's French national basketball team between 1985 and 1995 and was the 7th leading scorer in the history of the men's professional basketball league in France, coached a team of nine female basketball players made up of athletes with and without intellectual disabilities. They secured second place in Division 1A with hosts Belgium taking Gold. Occansey encourages more people to experience Special Olympics Games in order to remove the taboo around people with intellectual disabilities. “People are afraid because they may have never have met someone with ID. But when they come they know."

Sir Arif was training at his school, 'Danish Gha' and that is how his family was introduced to Special Olympics Pakistan. His siblings do not have any disabilities and his mother was very worried as he was unable to cope with his work. She admitted him in a special school where his improvement was very slow. After joining Special Olympics Pakistan, a noticeable change could be seen as he made many new friends on the grounds. He excelled in Basketball to the point of being selected for the world games (Athens 2011), where he won a silver medal, confirming that people with intellectual disabilities are as good as any other, if given a chance. He currently trains other special children in basketball. His family and friends encourage others to join the programme.

My name is Chloe MacMullan. I am a member of Dublin Sports Club 15 and I was picked to be part of our team to play at the Ireland Games.View Story My name is Chloe MacMullan. I am a member of Dublin Sports Club 15 and I am on the basketball team. I play as a forward on the team. I was picked to be part of our team to play at the Ireland Games where 1,500 athletes took part from June 12th-15th this year. We are in the Eastern Reigion team and we had lovely blue uniforms specially for the Games. The five different regions had different uniforms. We travelled from Dublin to Limerick on a special train. There were bands at the station, singing and drumming to cheer us on. We all paraded through the streets of Limerick to the Special Olympics Opening Ceremony in The People's Park. Everyone was clapping and cheering for us. The next day the serious sport began and we all did our best and enjoyed taking part. We played matches against all the other regions. My team came 4th, we were a bit disappointed but we had great fun and loved our trip to the Games in Limerick in 2014.
