Basketball is one of the top sports at Special Olympics. Players take it up at all ages and at all abilities, from young players learning to handle the ball and keep it under control while dribbling to older, more experienced players who have the moves and know the strategies to play challenging ball.

It's also one of the favorite sports for the Special Olympics Unified Sports initiative, when players with and without intellectual disabilities form teams to play other unified teams. It's a learning experience that's also a lot of fun.

By Rebecca Ralston

Despite a tight game and aggressive play, the home team pulled away with the victory – the game’s final score was Duke – 42, UNC – 37. Nearly 400 students and community members came out to support the teams and shared in the energy, passion and determination of Unified Sports.

The Unified Basketball Tournament at New Paltz

By Zach Morales

On Sunday, March 10th, we went to the Unified Basketball Tournament at New Paltz. It was a very exciting and great game.View Story On Sunday, March 10th, we went to the Unified Basketball Tournament at New Paltz, NY. The athletes were Felix, Rafael, Zach, Brenda, Linda, Molly, Kathy, Abigail, Hunter, Mike and Jacob. We had our own room downstairs to leave our belongings there during the basketball tournament. We went upstairs to the gymnasium. We sat on the bleachers, and we watched the teams competing against each other, trying to score the points by getting the basketball through a high net. At 12:00, we played against the teams, trying to score the points by trying to get the ball through a high net. We played several games for six minutes. Afterwards, we received bronze medals because we came in third place. Then, we took our belongings from downstairs, and we went to the school bus. We went to McDonald's to eat something. It was a very exciting and great game on that day. My favorite part about the basketball was playing against the teams and trying to score the points.

About Zach Morales:I am a 10th grader and I go to Sleepy Hollow High School, the home of the Headless Horsemen. I participate on our Special Olympics Pioneer League team. This was our first Unified Basketball tournament.

Inclusion is working for TSV Hagen Unified

By Daniel Stanev

Special education teacher Heinz-Werner Schmunz first heard of Special Olympics when he accompanied some of his students to Special Olympics Germany´s National Winter Games 2001, and it did not take long for Special Olympics to win his heart.View Story Special education teacher Heinz-Werner Schmunz first heard of Special Olympics when he accompanied some of his students to Special Olympics Germany´s National Winter Games 2001, and it did not take long for Special Olympics to win his heart. Back home in Hagen, North Rine-Westphalia, the former Basketball professional player (1971 – 1981 for SSV Hagen) launched a basketball program at his school. Teams from Gustav-Heinemann-Schule have so far competed on several regional tournaments and National Games and represented SO Germany at SO World Summer Games 2007 in Shanghai. Recruiting Unified Partners from Basketball club BBV Hagen and athletes from Gustav-Heinemann-Schule, Heinz-Werner started a Unified Basketball Team in 2008. Since 2009 this team, TSV Hagen Unified, participates in the city´s regular Basketball league operation, competing with teams of players without intellectual disabilities on a weekly basis. Heinz-Werner and his team proved to all of us: Inclusion is working!

About Daniel Stanev:I have been working for Special Olympics Germany since April 2011. My personal highlight since working for SO Germany was being part of the German delegation during Special Olympics World Summer Games Athens 2011.
