Nine Countries in Regional Weight Lifting Tournament in Lebanon

Under the supervision of the Lebanese Youth & Sports Minister Faisal Karamy, Special Olympics Lebanon hosted the Regional Weight Lifting Tournament for the MENA region from January 14-17, 2012 Nine SOMENA states took part in the tournament, including Jordan, Syria, Morocco, Egypt, Iraq, Palestine, Iran and Lebanon. The opening ceremony was held at the Sports City Court in Beirut.

Prominent Figures

Prominent figures attended the event, from them: former Secretary General of the Arab League Amr Moussa, Egypt’s Ambassador to Lebanon Mohammad Tawfik, Iranian Ambassador to Lebanon Ghadanfar Rokon Abadi, former Lebanese Minister Bechara Merhej, SO Lebanon’s Athlete Families Committee Brigadier Mohammad Abdouni, SOMENA Regional President Ayman Abdel Wahab of SOMENA, representatives of the Lebanese Army Commander, ambassadors of Iraq and USA, along with SO Lebanon National Director Hala Al Husseiny. The tournament started off by the playing the Lebanese national anthem, which was followed by a parade of the partaking teams. Regional President, Ayman Abdel Wahab also delivered a speech on behalf of SOMENA.

Opening Ceremony

The opening ceremony continued as one of the SO Lebanon athletes lit the tournament’s torch, while another athlete recited the Special Olympics oath. Mr. Amr Moussa, Iranian Ambassador Ghadanfar Rokon Abadi and Egyptian Ambassador Mohammad Tawfik displayed contentment over the tournament and athletes performance, asserting the importance of such sports events in highlighting the cooperation between states to have them organized successfully
