Special Olympics Announces Additions to International Board of Directors

Two new members are elected to the Special Olympics International Board of Directors, Former Under Secretary of State and current Harvard John F. Kennedy School of Government Professor Nicholas Burns and NBA Legend Dikembe Mutombo.

Washington, D.C. - 9 May 2013 - The Special Olympics International Board of Directors held a telephonic meeting on Wednesday 8 May 2013 and elected onto the Board of Directors new members Former Under Secretary of State and current Harvard John F. Kennedy School of Government Professor  Nicholas Burns and NBA Legend Dikembe Mutombo. Participating in their first Board meeting since they were appointed to the Board of Directors were President & CEO, BowerGroupAsia

Mr. Ernest Bower and University of Colorado School of Medicine Coleman-Turner Chair/Professor; CU Associate Vice President & Coleman Institute Executive Director Dr. David Braddock.

The Special Olympics International Board of Directors is the ultimate governing authority for the Special Olympics movement and is composed of leaders in the areas of business, government, disability, sports and entertainment. The Board is responsible for the global affairs and strategies of Special Olympics; determines its policies and programs and oversees all top-level management. Board Directors are elected to a three-year term and may be re-elected twice - for a maximum of nine consecutive years of service.

Nicholas Burns

Nicholas Burns is a retired American diplomat. He is currently Professor of the Practice of Diplomacy and International Politics at Harvard's John F. Kennedy School of Government and a member of the Board of Directors of the school's Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs. He also serves on the Board of Directors of the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, the Atlantic Council, the Appeal of Conscience Foundation, the Center for the Study of the Presidency and Congress and the Richard Lounsberry Foundation. During his career in the State Department, he was United States Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs within the United States Department of State. Appointed by President George W. Bush, he was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on March 17, 2005 and was sworn into office by Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. As Under Secretary, he oversaw the bureaus responsible for U.S. policy in each region of the world and served in the senior career Foreign Service position at the Department. He retired on April 30, 2008. He was a Visiting Scholar at the Woodrow Wilson Center in Washington D.C. in summer 2008. In July 2009, Mr. Burns joined The Cohen Group, a consulting firm in Washington D.C, as a Senior Counselor.

Dikembe Mutombo

NBA Legend Dikembe Mutombo is the Chairman and President of the Dikembe Mutombo Foundation which he created in 1997. Located in Atlanta, Georgia the Foundation's mission is to improve the health, education and quality of life for the people in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. One major project was the construction of a new general hospital in the capital city of Kinshasa, DR Congo, the country in which he was born.

A graduate of Georgetown University, Mutombo played professional basketball for 18 years before retiring from the Houston Rockets in 2009

He is the first Youth Emissary for the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and he also served on the Advisory Board for the Fogarty International Center at the National Institutes of Health and presently serves on the boards of the National Constitution Center and Opportunity International. Mr. Mutombo has also served as an Advisor and Consultant to Freeport McMoRan and as an advisor to Hewlett-Packard. Mutombo has been named ABC's Person of the Week, Essence Magazine's 2001 Achiever, and Sporting News'    No. 1 Good Guy. Mutombo has been featured in Europe's TIME magazine, Sports Illustrated for Kids, the New York Times, the Philadelphia Inquirer and the Houston Chronicle just to name a few.    In 2009, NBA Commissioner David Stern appointed Mutombo to the newly created position of Global Ambassador. In this capacity he has traveled throughout the Middle East, Asia and Africa. Mutombo now works to grow and celebrate the game through numerous international NBA events including Basketball without Borders. In addition, he works closely on NBA Cares outreach efforts with Hall of Famer Bob Lanier who serves as Special Assistant to the Commissioner.
