Poland is the host of the 2013 European Unified Football Tournament which will
take place from June 5th - 9th involving twelve Unified 11-a-side teams.
The tournament also serves a the European Qualifier to the Special Olympics
Unified Cup to be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in November 2014.
Athletes will represent Austria, France, Germany, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania,
Poland, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovaki and Turkey in this three day
Each team consists of 17 players: nine athletes with
intellectual disabilities and eight athletes ("partners") without intellecual
disabilities aged between 16-23.The teams were built on Unified Sports
principals over the past six months to a year working with experienced Special
The tournament Opening Ceremony will take place on
June 5th on the sports grounds of Legia Warszawa, Agrykola with classification
rounds taking place on June 6th and 7th. On June 8th the final matches, awards
and closing ceremony will take place at the Pepsico Arena.
Special Olympics tournament is aligned to the UEFA Respect Campaign, promoting
a message of respect, acceptance and inclusion in the game of football for
people with intellectual disabilities.
Football is the most popular sport
at Special Olympics in Europe with 128,000 players registered including more
than 20,000 unified footballers.
