European Football Week

UEFA Grassroots Day (May 22) was celebrated in Romania with a Special Olympics Football tournament involving eight teams from a number of special schools across the country. The tournament was held in partnership between Special Olympics Romania and FRF Training Centre in Buftea and served as one of the key highlights of 2013 European Football Week.

European Football Week is a Special Olympics initiative which takes every year calling on the European Football community to open more opportunities in football for athletes with intellectual disabilities. It is strongly supported by UEFA as well as football federations and clubs across Europe.

The tournament served as a good opportunity to select athletes to represent Romania in the upcoming Special Olympics Unified Football Tournament taking place in Poland from June 5-9.

Unified tournaments bring together people with and without intellectual disabilities to compete on the same team. Twelve Unified teams will compete representing: Austria, France, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, Turkey and Hungary.

Based on their performance at the European Unified Tournament Team Romania may be in with a chance of qualify to compete in the first Special Olympics Unified World Cup to be held in Brazil in 2014.
