The game of volleyball is attractive to all types of players, from competitive to recreational, young and old. To play volleyball players need to acquire a few basic skills, learn a few rules, require very little equipment, and can play the game almost anywhere – from the beach to the gym. The aim of the sport is to score more points by hitting the ball with the hands and sending it over the net to the opponent's court.

Recently, Special Olympics was awarded a two-year grant from the SportsUnited Division of the U.S. Department of State to support a coaching fellowship to recruit and train high level Special Olympics coaches and leaders from the United States, Serbia, and Montenegro. A total of 20 fellows from the United States, Serbia, and Montenegro will participate in various 10-day workshops focused on recruiting and training high-level coaches and adapting their skills to work with athletes with intellectual disabilities to compete in soccer (football) and volleyball. Unified Volleyball - Just as fun as the first time!

By Chris Parker Hunt

Our Team name was the "DC Stars"

My second round of playing Unified Volleyball with Special Olympics athletes from District of Columbia, proved to be just as rewarding and fun as the first time.View Story My second round of playing Unified Volleyball with Special Olympics athletes from District of Columbia, proved to be just as rewarding and fun as the first time. We definitely had more time and space to practice all season and all of us improved. During the Summer Games opening tournament we won 2 out of 3 games – all against tough opponents and we walked away with 5th place participation ribbon. We will have to work harder to get the gold! One of the athletes I play with was featured on the local news…Check it out. Jerome is amazing! Can’t wait for next season when we compete again and hope to make it to the medal round!

About Chris Parker Hunt:I am the VP of Strategic Gifts and Development Operations at Special Olympics and I am happiest when playing Unified Sports!
