Euroleague Stars support the Special Olympics Symbol

November 20, 2013

Turkish Airlines Euroleague Basketball continue their strong support of European Basketball Week

Basketball for All

Some of the greatest names in Basketball – Spanoulis, Navarro, Diamantidis, Bogdanovic, Fernandez, Hines, Ajinca, Mirotic -  will proudly support Special Olympics on court next Thursday (November 28th) and Friday (November 29th) in the Turkish Airlines Euroleague, to show their solidarity for acceptance, respect and inclusion for people with intellectual disabilities.
Rounds 6 and 7 of the Turkish Airlines Regular Season will be dedicated to Euroleague Basketball’s corporate social responsibility programme, One Team and their long-time strategic partner Special Olympics.
The Special Olympics symbol represents the transformation that a person with an intellectual disability experiences by training and competing in sports like basketball with Special Olympics. It depicts a change from disempowerment and prohibition to action, achievement, joy and ultimately triumphs. This transformation does not happen alone but in a community, supported and celebrated by others, as represented by the globe.
Between November 21 and 29, in addition to the call to action by Euroleague Players, arenas across Europe will welcome male and female Special Olympics athletes to centre court, where One Team Ambassadors or team captains will read messages before each tip off to increase awareness of the fight against exclusion that is at the heart of both One Team and Special Olympics.
“It is a huge honour for us to have some of the greatest names in basketball proudly donning the Special Olympics symbol” says Mary Davis, Regional President of Special Olympics Europe Eurasia “and by standing shoulder to shoulder on court with our Special Olympics athletes they send a powerful message that everyone regardless of their abilities or disabilities should have the opportunity to transform their life through the power and joy of basketball.”

The dedication of Round 6 and 7 to Special Olympics is also part of Turkish Airlines Euroleague One Team's support of the 2013 Special Olympics European Basketball Week. Taking place from November 30 to December 8, European Basketball Week is one week of the year where the European basketball community are called on to play their part in expanding more opportunities for players with intellectual disabilities.
