Learning from the Best

By William Schermerhorn

Coaches from all around the world took part in the training in San Juan.

The nonprofit foundation set up by swimming superstar Michael Phelps showed swimming coaches from around the world how to improve goal setting, physical fitness, water safety and overall wellbeing. Marissa Gagnon of the Michael Phelps Foundation made the presentation to the coaches the morning before the first World Aquatics Invitation kicked off in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Through the “im” Program, athletes with intellectual disabilities will learn to swim and/or advance in their swimming skills, setting and reaching personal goals and learning about health, nutrition and personal wellbeing. During the event, an agreement will be signed by the Municipality of San Juan, the Special Olympics and the Michael Phelps Foundation to develop the “im” Program in San Juan. The Michael Phelps Foundation is a non-profit organization that focuses on the promotion of the sport of swimming and a healthy lifestyle, especially for children. It was established in 2000 by Michael Phelps. The Foundation provides programs of cooperation with Boys & Girls Clubs of America,, and Michael Phelps Swim School, offering classes in water safety, recreational activities in the pool, and swimming training.
