A Bit of Advice

Special Olympics volunteers line up at the pool to receive direction for the upcoming aquatics events.

Francisco San Miguel, one of the swimming officials at poolside--himself a volunteer--had some advice for the volunteers working directly with the athletes: once they're at poolside, the athletes win or lose on their own terms. "They've trained for it," he said, and they know what to do. Some of the young volunteers may find it sad that some athletes do poorly. That's part of sports, he said. "There are some competitors who fail," he said. "At the end of the day, they're all winners."
