Malawi President Meets Athletes, Expresses Support for Special Olympics

By Felix Chisowa

On December 3, the International Day of People with Disability, 20 athletes together with our national family coordinator, and 4 coaches were invited to an official function which took place at the state house in Blantyre, Malawi. For the first time, the president of Malawi, Her Excellency Mrs. Joyce Banda, recognized Special Olympics Malawi, stating in her speech that she appreciated the good job we are doing -- providing sports to people with intellectual disabilities. In addition, the Minister of Sports Irene Kachere in her speech encouraged parents who have children with intellectual disabilities to participate in Special Olympics activities such as sports and Healthy Athletes.
