Breaking the Silence

By Story from Kazakhstan

Amirbekova was always very shy. You could often find her hiding behind her mother in social settings. In 1998, she joined Special Olympics where she began competing in speed skating and roller skating. She is a hard worker and does not miss practice. In 2009, Amirbekova took her skills globally and participated in the Special Olympics World Winter Games Olympics in Alaska in 2001 where she earned gold and bronze medals. It was there that the miracle happened, Amirbekova was no longer hiding behind her mother, instead she was standing enthusiastically as a participant of the World Games and proudly displaying her medals. Amirbekova has become an athlete leader and assistant coach within Special Olympics Kazakhstan. She will take our talents back to the world stage and participate in the Special Olympics World Winter Games PyeongChang 2013.
