Becoming a Mother Has Made Me a Better Athlete

By Natalia Akimova

Natalia Akimova with Team Russia's delegation liaison Olga Khon.

My name is Natalia Vadianova and I am proud to be back representing Team Russia after a 12 year break to get married and have my children. I have two boys and one girl. During those 12 years I missed figure skating very much and always kept in touch with my Special Olympics coaches. My husband is very supportive of me and while I miss them all I am enjoying Korea very much. I first started training in figure skating with Special Olympics in 1993. I love World Games because you get to see the World competition and this drives me further. I feel like I am competing better than ever before.I am more mature now. I can analysis the competition better and I take more responsibility for my training. I never met my mother but my grandmother told me that she dreamed that I would compete in sports and succeed. I now dream the same for my children.

About Natalia Akimova: I compete in Figure Skating SinglesDivision FL3/30+ for Team Russia.
