Local Partnership Means Dental Care for Indonesian Athletes

By Karl Hejlik

A Special Smiles event in Indonesia last month celebrated “World Oral Health Day” on March 20 by screening more than 150 students from special schools around Banten Province. Thanks to a local sponsor providing mobile dental services, Special Olympics lived up to the day’s name by providing oral health care to students in need. Ciptadent provided a dental van for the necessary dental work, education on brushing, and oral health supplies that students took with them. On the spot, Ciptadent representative Mr. Aris agreed to support future Special Smiles events in the area. In addition to providing follow-up care, several aspects of the event differed from more traditional Special Smiles events. The screenings were conducted independently of Special Olympics sporting events, offered care to all students with intellectual disabilities regardless of participation in Special Olympics, and was completely locally funded.
