Quality Eye Care for Athletes

The Special Olympics Lions Club International Opening Eyes Program signs MOU with South African Optometric Association.

The Special Olympics Lions Club International Opening Eyes Program has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the South African Optometric Association at a Healthy Athletes Screening in Bloemfontein. The partnership see’s both parties working together to improve the quality of life for millions of individuals diagnosed with intellectual disabilities who take part in Special Olympics. The MOU creates a framework for both organisations to work together on numerous projects aimed at improving eye care including the training of optometry students and optometrists to provide vision care to individuals with intellectual disabilities. CEO of Special Olympics South Africa, Annemarie van Wieringen, said the following about the partnership: “This partnership presents a great opportunity for Special Olympics South African athletes to receive high quality vision care. We are grateful to the South African Optometric Association for sharing our vision.”
