A Change in Course: Enhancing Care for People with Intellectual Disabilities

By Steve Perlman

It was my privilege to represent Special Olympics and the American Academy of Developmental Medicine and Dentistry at the Clinton Global Initiative-University. This was our first exposure to CGI-U and it was inspiring to be present with more than 1000 young people making commitments to make the world a better place. Our host, Ann Costello of the Golisano Foundation, was fantastic as always and our leaders shared the experience of a lifetime. We presented at the poster session describing the collaboration of Special Olympics Healthy Athletes with AADMD student chapters. Although health was not a priority at the conference, we were able to meet and network with many wonderful, dedicated students and faculty. Everyone at CGI-U signed a commitment letter to work for a better future. The AADMD commitment was “A Change in Course: Mobilizing Medical and Dental Students to Enhance Care for People with Intellectual Disabilities.”
