Coach B on Fox 26

By Ned Hibberd

Believe it or not, my father was a Special Olympic Coach for several years back in the early 70’s. My father taught me at an early age of 12 to always give back to the community. I would volunteer my time with his Special Olympics group in Richardson, Texas. I found myself practicing with the athletes, helping them get to their next event, or I waited at the finish line to cheer them on. In college, I would hand out water or just lead the athletes in the right direction at an event or practice. I knew God gave me a special gift to work with these wonderful athletes. I had no idea at that time that I would still be a part of Special Olympics today. I made a career move when I lived in the Dallas area and became a Special Ed. teacher for Mesquite ISD. I found out that they had a Special Olympics team and once again I was hooked in helping those athletes. I was actively involved in the bowling team and track team. Many years later my family had to move to the Houston area. I was sad in some ways, but it did not take long to get involved again. I immediately found a Special Ed. teaching job and started helping out with the Special Olympic bowling team and the track team in Fort Bend ISD. Today I am the Head of Delegation for the Alvin Panthers. I am the Head Coach of the track team, swim team, basketball team and the bowling team. I love what I do and it shows when I am around my athletes.

About Ned Hibberd: Head of Delegation for the Alvin I.S.D. Special Olympics team. I am also the Head Coach of the bowling team, the track team, the basketball team, and the swim team. I work with children from the age 8 - 21 with intellectual disabilities to develop self confidence and social skills. Our team offers year round training in 4 sports. The athletes are very proud when they win an award or ribbon in these events. We are so thankful for the volunteers and chaperones that help out with our team.
