Special Olympics Chairman & CEO Timothy Shriver enjoyed a surprise visit from Special Olympics athletes when he was in Berlin, Germany on Wednesday May 29th to deliver a keynote address at the 5th UNESCO World-Sports-Ministers Conference (MINEPS V). The athletes, including Dennis Mellenthin, Anne Richter, Patrick Matern and Alexander Nicol, welcomed Timothy Shriver to their city by presenting him with the official symbol of Berlin – the Berlin Buddy Bear. Earlier that day, Shriver joined German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Jacques Rogge President of the International Olympic Committee, Sir Phil Craven, and Irina Bokova, Director-General of UNESCO at the Opening Session of the conference. One goal of the conference was to establish the ‘Declaration of Berlin’, which, as one of three key areas, also included Sport as a Fundamental Right for All. During his time in Berlin, Shriver also met with Daniela Schadt, to thank her for her patronage of SO Germany.
