Special Olympics South Africa hosts Healthy Athletes screening at Thanduxolo

By Tsholofelo Mashuga

On the 25TH of May, Lions Clubs Opening Eyes together with Special Olympics South Africa hosted a Healthy Athletes screening event for 300 athletes in Witbank at Thanduxolo. Healthy Athletes currently offers health screenings in seven disciplines namely; Fit feet(Podiatry), FUN Fitness (physical therapy), Health Promotion(better health and well-being), Healthy Hearing (audiology), Med Fest(sports physical examination), Opening Eyes (vision) and Special Smiles (dentistry). Dr. Makhubo, a dentist who works with the Department of health was really moved by the event. “It was an eye opener of how we have neglected to incorporate people with intellectual disability into programs. There is clearly a huge need. Thanks to this screening we can go back to the drawing board and improve our programs.” Nokulunga Shabangu, an athlete from Wolvenkop Special School plays netball, table tennis and indigenous games. With the assistance of her hearing aid, she can communicate better with her loved ones.
