A Mother's Story

By Paola Martinelli

Gina Trujillo, Special Olympics Mexico Athlete

When Gina was born the doctors did not know she had intellectual disability, by the time I realized it, she was 2 month old. Upon learning of her disability, Gina’s father abandoned the family, leaving the mother to care for two children. At two years Gina began to talk and walk with help of his mother and grandparents. When Gina was 3 years his mother remarried, and with help from her husband raised Gina. At 12 years she began to read and write and things on her own. With the help of my husband, I raised my children as a mother and as a woman.
