All-Russian Competition Features Healthy Athletes for the First Time

Dmitry Chistyakov, an athlete from Special Olympics Russia, will take what he learned from his Healthy Athletes screenings with him as he prepares to compete alongside more than 2,000 athletes from 58 nations at the 2014 Special Olympics European Games in Belgium next September.

Dmitry Chistyakov was one of the 167 individuals who recently benefitted from Healthy Athletes screenings hosted by volunteers from Ulyanovsk State University in Russia. Dmitry shared what he learned, “Now I know my [blood pressure], height and weight. It was noted that I do morning exercises, follow correct diet, go in for sports. The only thing I lack – sun protection, but there is not much sun in Siberia!” This Healthy Athletes event, which featured FUNfitness and Health Promotion, marked the first time that an occasion of its kind corresponded with an all-Russian Special Olympics competition and only the second time in history that these screenings have taken place in Russia (first time in 2012). The four-day event concluded with tremendous success. More than 75 percent of the competing Unified football and Unified table tennis athletes completed screenings, and 65 medical professionals from the Ulyanovsk region joined the Special Olympics movement as Healthy Athletes volunteers.
