Cycling Group Marks Just the Start for the Manitowoc Miracles Health Club Lynn Erickson | сен 16, 2013 | North America: Wisconsin Members of the Manitowoc Miracles Health Club prepare for their weekly 12-mile journey along Lake Michigan as part of Special Olympics Healthy Communities in Wisconsin. Members pictured include (left to right): Heidi Van Abel, Scott Zolltheis, Jeff Morgan, Shaylene Morris and Ashley Kobel. Kristin Zolltheis launched the Manitowoc Miracles Health Club in Wisconsin this summer with a weekly bide ride along the beautiful Lake Michigan coast. Six Special Olympics athletes along with Zolltheis and an assistant met every week at their local YMCA to begin a 12-mile journey, with a stop midway at their local Subway where peer education frequently was overhead (“Let’s order a 6-inch sub instead of a footlong,” and, “Water or milk are better choices than soda.”). News of this fun experience spread fast, and their group is now up to 10 cyclists. What’s next for the Manitowoc Miracles? This month, they are beginning a community walking club and are engaging more people in this Special Olympics Healthy Communities’ activity by partnering with Holiday House, a local agency that offers employment opportunities to people with intellectual disabilities, the local YMCA, and the Manitowoc County Health Department.
