Bellefonte Wizards were asked to lead in their Hometown Parade

By Peter C. Mathews (Head Coach)

Getting ready for the march

Special Olympics Virginia, Area 26 Team, the Bellefonte Wizards are loved in their Alexandria neighborhood of Del Ray. On Sunday, October 27, 2013, they were asked to lead in the annual Halloween Parade. The team proudly wore their uniforms, and marched down Mt. Vernon Avenue, Del Ray's Main Street. The team enjoyed hearing their names and cheers from the crowd. The team said that this was the greatest thrill they ever had next from going to the State Championships. Coach Peter and Coach Rosita marched along with the team as Coach Renee' took pictures from the stands. The team had a cook-out after the event with a live band for a courtyard dance. This was another moment for the Wizards' Book of Memories.

About Peter C. Mathews (Head Coach): I am a proud coach of the Bellefonte Wizards. I am also their counselor in the group home and apartments where they live. I have been their counselor for 14 years and their basketball coach for 5 years. I love this population and feel Blessed to serve them. I am originally from Seravezza, Italy and was lucky enough to be educated in America. I became a US Citizen at age 18 and to this day I am living my American Dream. I chose working with intellectual disable people because I believe they to should live their dreams. The Special Olympics Virginia is doing just that for my group which is why we are known by our neighbors as the happy bunch. I have been married to my wife Nancy Mathews for over 41 years, and she is my greatest supporter.
